　　Mydearfriendsallovertheworld,

　　全世界親愛的朋友們:

　　TodaywecelebrateaecialNewYearwithamomentousnumber:theYearTwoThousand.

　　今天,我們慶祝一個特殊的新年,它的年號不同凡響,是2000年。

　　AswemoveintoanewMilleium,manyofushavemuchtobethankfulfor.Mostoftheworldisatpeace.Mostofusarebettereducatedthanourparentsorgrandparents,andcanexpecttolivelongerlives,withgreaterfreedomandawiderrangeofchoices.

　　走進新千年之際,有許多事是我們許多人都應該感恩的。世界大部分地區平安無事。我們大多數人比自己的父母和祖父母受的教育多,預期壽命長,享有更大的自由和更廣泛的選擇。

　　Anewcenturybringsnewhope,butcanalsobringnewdangers-oroldonesinanewandalarmingform.

　　新世紀帶來新的希望,但也可能帶來新的危險,或者是老危險換上了可怕的新形式。

　　Someofusfearseeingourjoandourwayoflifedestroyedbyeconomicchange.Othersfearthereadofbigotry,violenceordisease.Othersstillaremoreworriedthathumanactivitiesmayberuiningtheglobalenvironmentonwhichourlifedepends.

　　有些人擔心,經濟變化會毀掉我們的就業機會和生活方式。又有些人擔心偏見、暴力或疾病會蔓延。還有一些人擔心,人類活動可能毀掉生命賴以存在的全球環境。

　　Nooneknowsforsurehowseriouseachofthesedangerswillbe.Butonethingtheyhaveincommon:theydonotreectstatefrontiers.

　　誰也不能確實知道,這每一種危險到底有多麼嚴重。但是我們知道,這些危險有一個共同點:它們都是不尊重國界的。

　　Eventhestrongeststate,actingalone,maynotbeabletoprotectitscitizeagaitthem.

　　即便是最強大的國家,如果單獨行動,或許也無法保護其公民免受這些危險之害。

　　Morethaneverbeforeinhumanhistory,weallshareacommondestiny.Wecanmasteritonlyifwefaceittogether.

　　在人類歷史上,我們從未像現在這樣休戚與共。只有共同面對,我們才能掌握自己的命運。

　　Andthat,myfriends,iswhywehavetheUnitedNatio.

　　ThroughtheUnitedNatio,weareworkingtogethertopreservepeace;tooutlawweapothatkillandmaimindiscriminately;tobringmamurderersandwarcriminalstojustice.

　　通過聯合國,我們共同努力維護和平,禁止濫殺濫傷的武器,把大屠殺的兇手和戰爭罪犯繩之以法。

　　ThroughtheUnitedNatio,weareworkingtogethertodefeatAIDSandotherepidemictocontrolclimatechange;tomakecleanairandwateravailabletoeveryone.

　　通過聯合國,我們共同努力戰勝艾滋病和其他流行病,控制氣候變化,讓每個人都能享受到潔凈的空氣和飲水。
